Comparison

I grew up in a family where we were reminded to not “just sit there” but to keep our hands busy and help others out. This has made resting unsettling for me, as it seems to be the same as “doing nothing”, which doesn’t make sense when there’s always something to be done.

A few years ago, I was introduced to another kind of comparison, one that wasn’t the least beneficial. I had graduated but my career had yet to take off. I was far from achieving the accomplishments I’d set for myself. As I grew increasingly frustrated at the uncertainty of my future, I started to compare my situation to peers who seemingly had it all together. When was God going to answer my prayers for a job and alleviate my disappointment in myself?

My colleagues and I were having lunch at the pantry when we saw a colleague heading for the office door with her purse. “Where is she going?” someone in the group asked. Another colleague answered, "Oh, she has taken half the day off to watch a Korean pop concert. She has a premium ticket."
