Leaning into my fear and embracing the adrenaline coursing through my veins, I answered the Lord and said, "Yes, I'll go to China." I was 19-years-old and in my second year of college when I sensed God calling me to be a missionary. Young and naive, I had no idea what was happening when I heard “Go to China” on repeat in my head for a week, on my way to and from class, while eating meals in the dining common and when trying to fall asleep at night.

Since my home church in Mexico sent me out for missions in East Asia almost five years ago, I had been living by a mindset that it’s my responsibility to be productive in whatever ministry God leads me to. However, in the past year, I haven’t felt as busy or “productive” the way I have in other locations I’ve lived in. The extra downtime has prompted me to reflect on the years I’ve spent on this side of the world, which made me realise that I’ve been feeling weary for quite some time.

She spent a year befriending women in the red light district of a Chinese city, hoping to be a bearer of God’s eternal light; while he served on the fringes of Thailand for four years at a shelter for needy children.  Separately, Gina Chan and Daryl Tay had returned to Singapore in 2018, for an “involuntary break” from overseas missions, expecting to jump back into the field they each felt called to after a year at the Singapore Bible College (SBC).  But God had other plans.

Coming from a safe haven like Singapore, Yu Lian’s heart stirred as she met children from a shelter whose lives were tainted by drug abuse and family violence from as young as six years old. The year was 2010. The young Christian, then 18 years old, had just embarked on her very first mission trip with Radion International–a Christian organisation which serves villages in rural parts of Thailand–over her polytechnic school holidays.

There are going to be so many times that you doubt yourself, your abilities, and your calling. You are going to question if you really are useful, and if you truly should have left home in the first place. As excited as you are to make Jesus known in Asia, you’ll end up letting fear take over many times.
